Task 1 (Academic): Global Water Usage

Study the prompt and the model, then practise the same structure.

The Question

The prompt asks to summarise and compare global water usage patterns. The two pie charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in two regions of the world (North America and Central Asia). Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write at least 150 words.

Model answer

The pie charts compare the proportion of water consumed for agricultural, industrial, and domestic purposes in North America and Central Asia.

Overall, it is clear that water consumption patterns differ significantly between the two regions. Central Asia allocates the vast majority of its water to agriculture, whereas North America uses most of its water for industrial applications. Domestic water consumption constitutes the smallest share in both regions.

In Central Asia, agriculture is by far the dominant sector, accounting for 88% of total water usage. By contrast, North America directs just 39% of its water to agricultural tasks. However, this trend is reversed when it comes to industrial usage. North America dedicates half of its water resource (50%) to industry, while Central Asia uses a mere 5% for this purpose.

Regarding domestic consumption, both regions show relatively low usage. In North America, household water consumption accounts for 11% of the total, which is more than double the proportion recorded in Central Asia, where domestic use stands at only 7%.

How this answer scores
  • Highlight the stark contrast between industrial usage in North America and agricultural usage in Central Asia.
  • Group information logically: dedicate one body paragraph to agricultural use and another to industrial/domestic use.
  • Use comparative structures: 'whereas', 'in sharp contrast', 'by comparison'.
  • Include a clear overview paragraph stating the main trends before going into specific figures.
