The bar chart compares how much coffee the average person drank, measured in kilograms per year, in Finland, Brazil, Japan, and India in 2010 and 2020.
Overall, consumption increased in every country over the decade, but the gap between the heaviest and the lightest coffee drinkers remained enormous. Finland led by a wide margin in both years, while India consumed by far the least.
Finns were already drinking around 9.5 kg per person in 2010, and this rose to roughly 11 kg by 2020 — more than the other three countries combined. Brazil came a distant second, with consumption edging up only slightly, from about 5.5 to 6 kg.
The two Asian countries sat at the bottom of the chart. Japanese consumption grew modestly, from 3 kg to almost 4 kg. India recorded the lowest figures throughout, at well under 1 kg in 2010, yet its consumption more than doubled to around 1.2 kg in 2020 — the largest proportional increase of any country shown, even though the absolute amount remained tiny.
