We spend roughly a third of our lives asleep, yet for centuries the purpose of sleep remained one of biology’s deepest puzzles. It seemed, on the surface, a dangerous waste of time: an animal that lies unconscious for hours cannot hunt, eat, or defend itself. That sleep has survived hundreds of millions of years of evolution, despite these risks, strongly suggests it performs functions too important to abandon. Modern research has begun to reveal what those functions are, though scientists are quick to admit that much remains unknown.
Far from shutting down, the sleeping brain is intensely busy. Sleep unfolds in cycles, each containing distinct stages. In the deepest stage, brain waves slow and lengthen, and the body carries out essential maintenance. It is during this deep sleep that the brain appears to clean itself: channels widen and cerebrospinal fluid flushes through the tissue, washing away the waste proteins that accumulate during waking hours. Some researchers believe that a failure of this nightly clean-up may contribute to long-term damage to the brain.
A very different stage, known as rapid eye movement or REM sleep, is when most vivid dreaming occurs. Here the brain becomes almost as active as it is when awake, even as the body’s muscles are temporarily paralysed. REM sleep seems to play a particular role in handling emotion and in consolidating memory — taking the experiences of the day and weaving them into lasting knowledge. Students who sleep well after studying remember more than those who stay awake, a finding that has been confirmed many times in the laboratory.
Underlying these nightly cycles is the body’s internal clock, the so-called circadian rhythm, which keeps roughly to a twenty-four-hour pattern and is tuned by exposure to light. When this clock falls out of step with our schedules — as it does in shift workers or long-haul travellers — sleep suffers, and so does health. Chronic poor sleep has been linked to a striking range of problems, from weakened immunity and weight gain to difficulties with concentration and mood.
Despite this growing evidence, modern society often treats sleep as expendable, even as a sign of weakness or laziness to be overcome with willpower and caffeine. The science points firmly in the opposite direction. Sleep is not the absence of activity but a state in which the brain and body perform work that can be done at no other time. How much each person needs varies, but the message of the research is consistent: those hours of apparent stillness are among the most productive of our lives.
